Fuel production has been the main industry of Iran since 1920. Iran has a lot of fuels from which they generate energy. In 1970, Iran became the second largest producer of natural gas which is primarily used domestically, and crude oil. It is the second largest exporter of petroleum but this changed when the Gulf War started which reduced the production of oil in 1980. After the hostilities Iranian oil reserves remained the fourth largest in the world in 1989.
Iran, because of its production is becoming more and more popular for its production and supplying of crude oil supplying natural gas and oil energy. It is also have the largest reserves of uranium for using in nuclear fuel.
Although Iran and its resources of petrol and other fuel have been very successful, Iranian people have experienced some difficulties accessing it. For example in June 2007, the National Iranian Oil Company decided to impose fuel rationing. This meant that the motorists were only allowed to purchase just a limited amount of petrol per month. This announcement was made suddenly with no prior notice and this rationing was scheduled to last up to four months. It came as a shock and it angered many people which led to a protest where angry mob torched petrol stations. When this implementation was introduced, traffic was reduced, petrol consumption was also reduced and also pollution went down. Not just private motorists who suffered but also the businesses who relied on transportation.
Iranian car makers had an idea that they hoped would help motorists if there was a shortage of fuel in future. In 2006, they had produced more than 120,000 dual cars.
In1950, Iran launched the nuclear programme and it have become the seventh country in uranium hexafluoride (used in nuclear industry ant it is highly toxic).
It is believed and expected that fuel in the Middle East is going to increase a few years time as more reserves are being discovered in North Pars and South Pars. Domestic consumption of natural gas has risen in recent years and it is believed that it will continue to rise.
